As individuals approach the age of 65 and become eligible for Medicare, they are often confused about when to enroll and in addition, surprised and overwhelmed by the choices available to them. Options are plentiful and understanding the differences between Parts A, B, C, and D, and what each option covers, is important.
There are many nuances to the timing of enrollment and if you are unaware of these different windows of opportunity, and miss them, you could find yourself uninsured for a period of time and paying monetary penalties.
Because everyone’s situation is a little different, we help individuals identify when they should enroll, and what their preferences are for coverage. We tend to ask our clients “When are you turning 65?, “When are you retiring?” and “What is your level of satisfaction with your current insurance plan?” in order to gain some sort of baseline. We also take into consideration who else in their family requires insurance coverage, their network of doctors, what prescription drugs they take, and their utilization of the healthcare system. These are just some of the areas we touch upon in addition to other relevant topics.
There are many misconceptions about Medicare. For instance, many people think Medicare is free or that Medicare covers all healthcare-related costs. Others think that the most expensive plans must be their best choice. We review these to help prevent common mistakes.
Unfortunately, many older adults (and the children who help them through the process), fail to reassess their specific plans and coverage on an annual basis, during Medicare Open Enrollment Season. Instead, they simply allow last year’s decisions to roll over for another year. Healthcare needs change, and the plans change, from year to year so it is important to reassess your plan options to make sure you are still in the right plan for you.
Medicare Open Enrollment Season begins October 15, 2022 and ends December 7, 2022. Any changes you make during that time begin on January 1, 2023 and are in effect through December 31, 2023.
